‘KINGSTON CHOICE’ (2020)

Relational Art Experimental Project (Participant):

I created the work calling like this is because my audience will all the Kingston students and professors.

Different with ‘Candy Piles’I want everyone build on a thing rather than take out something from a thing. As Freud said, there must be a reason that everyone doing things, as subconscious was in the deep of the sea and a move may connect with your experience and memories you may not know.

Then there must be a reason that when people choose any specific color when they paint, it might be one saw the object before, it should be like one colour, or it is just the colour in one’s mind, the thing should be like that.

The motion will reflect the aesthetics in you, and others may get influenced by others, so I want to explore the aesthetics in ‘Kingston art students group’ What it can also do is to know themselves better when I question participants in the survey.

What I want to do is let participants to express their emotions very directly by smashing an egg that have pigments inside on the wall, they throw very hard, they may aim to a specific position of the canvas... That is not the author – me can control. Then the beauty of the work is the work full of occasionality and cannot be controlled by anyone.

I was intentionally inviting 100 people and used chopsticks to drill a hole on the egg and pour things out from the egg and after washing it, I put pigments instead inside the egg. I did it for 100 times.

I label the color with colored round shape stickers, it can seal the hole of the egg and can tell participants what is the color inside and let them to choose on. I chose five colors: primary colors+green+black. I think primary color is the color that nearest to wild nature and can reveal people’s emotion, and green is for neutrality and adjust, and since black is not in the color scheme, I think it will look great and shock by using black.

I put questions in the survey: Why you think you put the color in that position. Why you think you choose the colour and how you think the effect came out? ( You can also talk about why you choose egg from the box and anything you want to talk)

I kept a note book for the survey and everyone can add their thoughts on after they done the egg throwing, and they also can see what others thought about, I let them sign their names and kept videos to mark which person did which part. I think participants artwork still need to mark the author.

I did not just invite people from fine art, but also from graphic designs, fashion, product designs, and people from library, I want to see the converge of people’s opinions and aesthetics from different groups.

The pattern was sputtering, and some even are not on the canvas that I found really interesting because I never told audience to keep the colour on canvas, but everyone is intentionally keep colour on the canvas, I think most of them may want to protect the wall.

Some were actually splashed on the ceiling and wall, but I still consider it as a part of the work.

Everyone seemed enjoy to participant in it and happy to complete the survey, I think it is also a way that get better known of themselves.

After seeing the reviews I made a notebook to write about these reviews, and made a sort of conclusion on my view (no offense) just as a feedback.

I considered that Kingston art students have a positive and healthy mental status

I can see Lv.4 students are playing it grouply and they thought the actions was fun, they are playful and love to help others, I think that was what first year should do, and many Lv.5 students feel like drain their emotion and would love to discuss the concept of the work. They start to think more of the artwork itself, and end of the stage of experiement, start to question and complete their won styles.

Lv.6 seems stressful and they are people who is considering about futures, people in third year told me it was a way to put our their stress and press, so they feel it was fun. Also most of them are busy with doing things too, 80% refusion came from them, but I totally understand, and still lots of them were thinking of the methods and ideas of how I did the work.

Most of people choosing ‘Red’in this practice, and 80% of the reason is the love of the colour, 10% is pick up randomly or for the effect result. 10% is there were less of this colour on the canvas.

It comes out that all students here are tend to express their feelings, saying what they like by materials directly, rather than conceal themselves or considering how picture will come out, I think it is a very positive way to the art that passion and self-feeling is the first choice.

Most of the colour was gathering on the upper-right corner, I think is because most of people are right-handed and the canvas was via left. People are tending to find the ‘center’ of the canvas. 5% people want to put colour in a blank space due to this situation. 5% is due to the sport and habits they were training. People who get along very well tend to have a similar power and thinking ways, due to friends influential.

‘New Art Museum Designing proposal’

I choose this first project for demonstration because it could represent my most integrated concept of spacial design. I started to realize my interest in this area during my second year in university. In this group project, I work with two peer classmates: Yiyi Yang & Kristine Meniano. I generated the initial idea, and I made the model of it since I am the most experienced in constructing installation.

'As long as I am myself, I am an enormous entity of memories.. we live through many lives, in the books we read.'  -Umberto Echo

This project, setting on the idea of ‘new art institute’, leads us to library - one of the most traditional, historical medium with a fundamental purpose to deliver visual message, just like gallery and museum. In the time when interactive art is bringing more diversities to public experience, we hope that we made some breakthroughs in this project.

Inspired by Borges’ Babel Library, we seek to transmit messages as an integral entity. The core of the library is a set of bookshelves arranged in a shape of Archimedean spiral, a series of art-related books would be included. Horizontally the collection would be set in a chronological sequence, and from layer to layer there would be albums of works, historical studies, and contextual theories. Therefore art works are linked to its cultural and philosophical background in its time and the library construct an unity of information.

Humane care is also a key point in this project. Each bookshelf is engraved with braille, and ideally every book in the whole collection would include a copy for people who are visually disabled. Also, the arrangement of the bookshelves would be more safe for them to move, the circle would guide the readers to go forward either from classic period to contemporary or the other way around. Meanwhile, the library could provide space for art exhibitions and other events. It has four projectors on four pillars of the building to project events and artists life on the ceiling. As how the project is designed, we want it to be place where people get interactive experience, a new method to resonate with art.

Apart from the previous image, this one shows the indoor structure of the design. This computer-generated model could help us visualize the arrangement of the bookshelves, which are placed in spiral form like a a cutting onion. As for the arrangement of the books, we took reference from our library research and eventually decided to applied an unusual system in coordination with the shelves. We set them in chronological order, so that together they merge an entity of historical information. When the audience is guided towards the center, he is in a way going through time, as well as the development of artistic creation.

The second image illustrates a draft of how bookshelves would look like, they are designed with a curve, together they constitute an internal structure, moreover, it is also out of the consideration for the need of visual-disabled. Therefore, we can reduce the chance they get collided by the bookshelves.

In this project, I also designed furniture unit like 'mushroom' desk. It is in the shape of upside down mushroom whose root is the desk, the canopy area provides a safer space for personal items storage. Furthermore, the round shape was the same purpose like the shelves for visual-disabled. Also, the reading chair for disabled is brought  on the proposal which is embodied the concept of human care. We aim to protect visual-disabled people from getting hurt so that they can read safely.

The third image is the wood model (2020)
2mm MDF Board
80cmx80cm

This is a materialized model that can visually explain the idea more clearly. In the area near the wall, we intend to set two serpentine small galleries with a conveyor in the center which can send the audience from the entrance hall to the end hall. Because the form of gallery is long and not very wide, the convey is designed to maximize the use of space in the building and dredge the crowd. On the wall, it would be an electronic screen on the wall to show the life of artists and how they make their works. I think this is what nowadays gallery lack, people get limited information from the the description on the wall but they would not know how the work are made. By knowing how these works are made, they get a better understanding of these pieces.

We show art works that combine new and old ways. Not only with the ideas of the artists is presented on a digital screen as the French gallery 'Atelier des Lumieres' does, also with works on canvas placed on the walls of the entry and the end hall, in this way it can convey diversified art form to the audience. There are two same gallery that near the walls of west and east of the building. The white dot on the pillar is the projector that can show digital events, images on the ceiling which could lead audience to look up every now and then. It also helps people change their positions from time to time, which is good for relaxation.

Comfortation

In this project, I experienced with different colors of light, and I used color psychology (which is not testified yet) to explore which color could make people more comfortable. After reading several essay, I choose green to be the basic tone of my installation. The theme of my installation is to let my audience feel relax and comfortable, I believe people now need a time to face themselves, to communicate, to have an inner dialogue with themselves. I created a rocking chair and installed some light installation which surrounds the audience. I wish in this way my audience could fall into a mediation state, and find out what they truly annoyed and pursued

A woman’s dress in dream

I used red color as sling of the ‘unvisible’dress, since red stimulate people and it’s also can be a symble of sex and mature woman that risen people’s blood pressure, and warmth that woman can gives us, which creates a sense of company. The green is as to balance red and blue, which represent the reason of the man, still the red and green under the body is as navy’s color which stand for freedom and splendid life.

The Room after I install the dressed woman

It is interesting that the corridor light looks like red light by the green light in front, when standing in the green light according to our vision need to make up the balance.

The Future DNA

I used red and blue to represent the impulse and the calm, as war and peace in this era, as red and blue mixed together, I wish both the impulse and the calm stand by future people, as they angry with the reason and stay calm with the self-inner motive power, and I twisted two colors as a shape of DNA, the tail of the DNA is without color as the unknown. I placed it on the ceiling as it still far beyond us, and gives audience a sense of the future which also let them to calm and stay peace in mind.

Step to the unknown

As pink is the surprise in my colour sets, and green stays reason true, and healthy, I put the green as a steady future and we are in both reason and illusional world which is trying to extend our world and step to a new, unknown world,so I put the green strips into the closet as we step to the future with the business we are doing. While the process to make a progress is hard that human is trying to squashed into it they pursuit the speed as the light strip crowded together and suddenly goes into the dark
